Healthy Switchouts
Howdy folks!
It's that time of the year again... You know? That valiant attempt to get your health back on track commonly known as a New Year's resolution? Countless people make a vow to eat better and exercise in the new year. It's actually easier than you might think to make small changes to improve your pantry selection and subsequently, your entire overall health. Next time you venture to the grocery store, consider these healthy (and tasty!) switchouts. Make this year the year you stick with that resolution.

Holy chemical flavorings and artificial sweeteners, batman!! Low calorie? Sure. Healthy? Most assuredly not. You'd be better off with a small portion of real, all natural ice cream (or even better, lower fat gelato), homemade pudding or muffins made with less sugar, etc.
ReplyDeleteHi Melissa,
ReplyDeleteI'd love it if you could share some recipes or other things that you have come across that are healthy.
Not all of the above-mentioned items are loaded with chemical and artificial flavorings. Actually, my favorite thing on there is the oatmeal with blueberries- nothing artificial about that. I, too, am a fan of homemade things, but sometimes that's just not possible. These are not everyday treats; they are suggestions for options to the typical overloaded treats.
Sorry if I came on too harsh! I'm just not a fan of all the chemicals in so many pre-packaged foods, especially those that claim to be healthy. I know homemade is tough - we're all busy, but I try to make healthy treats in bulk when I have some time, and freeze them so they're ready when I want them. Here's a great alternative to Vitamuffins:
ReplyDelete1/2 cup brown sugar
1 1/2 cup oat bran
1 1/2 cup flour
1 1/2 tsp. baking powder
1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
2 Tbsp. ground flax seed soaked in 6 Tbsp. warm water
1 cup unsweetened applesauce
4 Tbsp. canola oil
fresh or dried fruits, nuts, etc. (optional)
Combine dry ingredients, then add rehydrated flax seed, applesauce and oil. Blend. Fill 12 muffin cups and let set for 10 minutes. Bake for 15 minutes at 400 degrees.
These freeze beautifully and at 126 calories, 2 grams of fat, and no cholesterol, they are comparable to Vitamuffins minus the undigestible sugar alcohols found in Vitamuffins! Hope you like the recipe, and thanks for letting me vent! :)
Hi Melissa,
ReplyDeleteThat sounds awesome! Thanks so much for sharing. I'm always looking for new ideas- I love the idea of baking in bulk and freezing- I can totally do that.
Definitely feel free to vent away- I am looking to be genuinely healthy, so I appreciate the advice. :-)
